Traditionally, a Millwright begins learning the trade through an Apprenticeship including educational courses,  To gain the knowledge and experience required, a Millwright apprentice may hone their skills for many years prior to completing the required examination.

Thorough knowledge and understanding is required in:

  • Various kinds of equipment
  • Blueprints and Schematics
  • Technical instructions
  • Gear boxes and pulleys
  • Electrical
  • Pump shaft alignments
  • Welding and Fabrication
  • Machining
  • Installing/assembling/disassembling/maintaining machinery, shafting, conveyors and etc.
  • Performing duties of a general labourer, pipefitter or carpenter
